Wedding Consultants
Make sure your consultant is someone you feel comfortable with. Ask for client references if you have any doubts. Get the consultant to list for you exactly what services she will provide. Find out what the fees will be - you may want to consider a contract spelling everything out. But if you're getting married on Nantucket, it's wise to have someone who knows the island and can network effectively with the services here. More Information>

Invitations
There used to be fairly rigid rules of etiquette regarding the style, size, and wording of wedding invitations (also true of the protocol involved in deciding upon the people who were invited). Invitations were usually formal in style and little leeway was afforded. You know, the kind that was printed on heavy paper in raised type and that started out "Mr. and Mrs. Seldon Quincy Muffleton request the honor of your presence at the wedding of their daughter, Desideria Hortense to Mr. Fester Horace Braveheart..." The Rings
The engagement ring. The wedding bands. Gifts to attendants and perhaps to people who've been especially helpful in planning and executing the whole wedding gala. As you'll find in the pages on gifts (www.nantucket.net/catalog), the jewelry store may become an important part of your life during this exciting time. And Nantucket Island has a number of fine jewelry shops. Let's talk about the selection of the engagement ring and wedding bands. More information > |
Wedding Attire
One of the most emotionally laden matters in planning your wedding is that of attire. The bride, of course, will focus great attention on the selection of the wedding outfit, be it gown-avec-12-foot train or beachside sarong. But remember, the groom, groomsmen, and bridal attendants also will probably be wearing special outfits -- and don't forget the flower girl and ring-bearer (if you're having them) and the bride's and groom's mother (and sometimes even the grandmother, and occasionally the children by former marriages of the couple). Whether indeed all these people will be expected to color- or style-coordinate their attire with the wedding party depends, of course, on how elaborate the wedding is. More Information >

Getting to Nantucket
You can fly to Nantucket or you can take the ferry. Some have even considered a Ferry Special Wedding. Some people wishing for a lifelong Nantucket wedding memory arrange to have their ceremony aboard a ferry. One couple recently called one of the ferry lines to ask if they could have their ceremony performed by the Captain next Valentine's Day during the Hyannis to Nantucket run. Says the Port Captain, "It's an old wives' tale that the Captain of any ship, ferry or not, can legally marry a couple." But, it turns out, there's no reason why it can't be done as an adjunct to a "regular" wedding. You could have the legal wedding on land, or you could bring your own JP or clergyperson along to do the legal part, provided he has sealegs. More information > |
Getting Around on Nantucket
Nantucket is a town, a county and an island - all one and the same. Nantucket Town is the historic, commercial, business and shopping center, with most of the island's shops, boutiques, hotels and inns, restaurants and services including police, firefighters and hospital. The only other settlement of any size is little Siasconset, a village to the southeast of the main town, referred to by islanders as 'Sconset. More Information >

Housing Guests & Wedding Party
Off-island guests are expected to pay for their own lodging, unless they are members of the wedding party. However, it is helpful, especially for a destination wedding, for the bride and groom to arrange lodging. More information >

Legal Requirements
An Information Packet is available at the Office of the Town Clerk of Nantucket with detailed information. All people who marry in Massachusetts must have a marriage license issued in Massachusetts. An out-of-state license cannot be used. Both prospective bride and groom must apply for the license in person. You may do so with the city or town clerk in any community in the state of Massachusetts. More information >
